The Women’s Art Society of Montreal was founded in 1894 with the goal of promoting women and their literary, musical, and artistic works in the Montreal arts community. The Society came into being at a time when women did not enjoy the same rights and opportunities as they do today, and, while things have changed for the better in this regard, the Society still adheres to its original purpose of promoting the artistic endeavours of women. Additionally, the WASM puts on monthly lectures or concerts at the McCord Museum, holiday events, and art exhibits.
This season, the WASM is celebrating its 120th year, and, as such, has turned its attention towards showcasing its rich organizational and artistic history. To this end, this digital collection has been started in order to give the public a glimpse into our past.
